Power language vs. powerless language
Powerless speech signals low status and drains conviction. The big offenders: fillers (um, uh), hedges/qualifiers (just, kind of, I think, maybe), tag questions (…right?), and uptalk (statements that rise like questions). Cutting these raises your Conviction Index.
Delivery metrics that matter
- Pace: aim ~110–160 words per minute. Too fast reads as nervous; too slow loses the room.
- Filler rate: keep under ~3% of words.
- Pauses: a deliberate pause beats an "um" — silence signals control.
Charismatic leadership tactics (CLTs)
Research-backed verbal tactics that make a message land: metaphor/analogy, a story, contrast ("not X, but Y"), rhetorical questions, three-part lists, and clear expressions of conviction/confidence. Great talks stack several of these.
The rewrite habit
Find your weakest line and strengthen it: drop the hedge, make a claim, add one CLT. "I just think maybe we could try this" → "We will try this — and here's why it works."
Content traces to powerless-language research and Antonakis's charismatic leadership tactics. Preview of the NEI-Labs Speakcraft platform.
Targeted drills
- Filler fast: Speak for 60s on "why I do what I do" — pause instead of saying um/uh. Analyze; get filler rate under 3%.
- De-hedge: Say a position three ways, removing just/kind of/I think each pass. Keep the one with the highest Conviction Index.
- CLT stack: Make a 45s point that uses a metaphor + a contrast + a three-part list.
- Pace control: Read a paragraph at 130 wpm (use a timer); re-record until pace lands in 110–160.
- Strong open/close: Write and deliver a one-line opener and a one-line closer with zero hedges.
Run each drill in the Practice tab and watch your scores move in your own notes.
